Will Smith Says Sorry to Chris Rock Over Oscars Slap
Will Smith has issued an apology to Chris Rock after slapping the comedian at the 94th Academy Awards on Sunday, 27 March.
Both attendees and viewers around the world watched in horror as the actor rushed onstage to slap Rock, who had made a hair-related joke about Smith’s wife, actress Jada Pinkett Smith, who suffers from alopecia.
After Smith won the award for Best Actor for his role in “King Richard”, he apologised to the Academy and his fellow nominees during his acceptance speech – but not to Rock, who apparently did not know about Pinkett Smith’s condition.
On Monday, 28 March, Smith took to Instagram to once again express his regret over his “unacceptable and inexcusable” behaviour at the awards ceremony.
This time, though, the rueful 53-year-old actor also directly addressed Rock: “I would like to publicly apologise to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.”
Rock has yet to respond, but we can only guess that he’ll accept Smith’s apology in the end.
